Indexer submission status and troubleshooting

Understand the submission status shown for each page (Queued, Failed, Paused, Rejected), how automatic retries work, and how to fix indexer errors.

After you submit pages to an indexer, the Sent to Indexer column of the Pages Report shows where each submission stands. This article explains each status and what to do when submissions fail.

Submission statuses

Indexer submission status

  • Green checkmark: the page was sent to the indexer. Place your cursor over it to see which indexer received it and when. A page can be submitted several times, to one or more indexers.

  • Queued: the page is waiting to be sent. Submissions are processed in the background, usually within minutes.

  • Failed: the indexer returned an error for this submission. Place your cursor over the status to see the indexer's error message.

  • Paused: submissions for your account are paused after repeated errors (see below). Place your cursor over it to see the reason, or click it to open your indexer settings.

  • Rejected: the indexer refused this URL and it will not be retried. Place your cursor over it to see the indexer's reason.

What happens when submissions fail

When your indexer returns an error, IndexCheckr doesn't drop your pages. It keeps them queued and retries automatically, waiting longer each time: after 1 hour, then 6 hours, 24 hours and 72 hours, and then every 7 days.

Meanwhile:

  • The Indexer settings page shows a red message with the error returned by the indexer.

  • After three failed attempts in a row, you receive an email titled Your pages are not being submitted to your indexer, with the reason and a link to your indexer settings.

Fixing the problem

The error message usually tells you what's wrong. The most common causes are:

  • You have run out of credits with the indexer. Top up your account on the indexer's website. Remember that indexer credits are separate from IndexCheckr credits.

  • Your API key is invalid or has changed. Copy the current key from the indexer's website, paste it in the Indexer settings, and click Save.

  • The indexer is temporarily unavailable. Nothing to do: the automatic retries send your pages once the service is back.

Once the problem is fixed, click try again in the red message on the Indexer settings page to resend the queued pages right away instead of waiting for the next retry.

No indexer connected

If no indexer is connected to your account, the Submit to indexer actions are greyed out, with the tooltip Connect with an indexer to submit your pages. See Connecting IndexCheckr to indexer tools.

If you disconnect your indexer while pages are still queued, the Indexer settings page asks you to connect one so the queued pages can be sent.
